How We Are Working Towards Being a More Sustainable Provider

At Wildanet, our mission is more than just delivering high-speed, full-fibre broadband to the communities of Cornwall and Devon. We’re passionately committed to becoming as sustainable and environmentally responsible as we can.  This commitment is reflected in our B Corp certification, our goal to achieve carbon neutrality, partnerships, awards, and our active support for local communities.

Leading the Way with B Corp Certification

In January 2024, we became the first UK based AltNet (Alternative Network Provider) to achieve B Corp certification.

This prestigious status recognises our dedication to meeting high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. As a B Corp, we are legally committed to holding a ‘profit with purpose’ approach to business, ensuring that our decisions benefit all stakeholders, workers, communities, customers, and the environment alike.

Partnership with Dynamic Fibre

Working with specialist contractor Dynamic Fibre has allowed us to introduce SMR to Cornwall, reducing our own carbon footprint whilst setting a new standard for streetworks across the region. Our partnership with Dynamic Fibre has also facilitated these changes:

  • Halve the number of lorry movements required
  • Minimise excavated material being sent to landfill
  • Reduce the use of quarried aggregates
  • Reduce the amount of asphalt needed by as much as 50% in targeted build areas.

Setting Ambitious Carbon Neutrality Goals

Alongside our B Corp status, we’re committed to setting and achieving ambitious sustainability goals. Becoming a carbon-neutral business is one of the biggest aims we have—here’s how we’re working to achieve it:

  • Renewable Energy: Sourcing 100% of our electricity from renewable suppliers.
  • Electric Fleet: Transitioning our fleet of vehicles, including cars, vans, forklifts, and cherry pickers, to all-electric models.
  • Reduced Travel: Encouraging hybrid working, remote meetings, and minimizing non-essential travel to lower emissions.
  • Energy Efficiency: Promoting energy-efficient practices both at home and in the office among our team members.
  • On-Site Renewables: Investing in on-site renewable energy solutions where possible.
  • Waste Management: Partnering with a zero-to-landfill waste management company to ensure responsible waste disposal.
  • Sustainable Headquarters: Refurbishing the historic Westbourne House in Liskeard as our new headquarters, preserving heritage while implementing modern sustainability practices.

These actions are part of our broader strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045, with the aspiration to become a carbon-negative business, actively removing more carbon from the atmosphere than we emit.

Supporting Local Communities and Biodiversity

Our dedication to sustainability also involves active engagement with local communities and environmental initiatives:

Tree-planting Pledge

Partnering with the Treeapp, we’re able to help plant thousands of new trees across the World. For every property our new fibre network passes through during infrastructure builds, we’ve pledged to plant a new tree.

The app works with local communities and enables anyone to plant a tree for free, every day, in less than a minute.

Plant One Cornwall

In 2023 we partnered with Plant One Cornwall, spending three days at Cabilla Cornwall, home to some of the UK’s last remaining temperate rainforest. The event saw colleagues, stakeholders and corporate partners coming together, creating a significant impact on local ecology by planting 1,000 trees, creating more dynamic water cycle systems and much, much more. This initiative continues yearly, and is something we’re very proud to be a part of.

Digital Community Hubs

We establish digital community hubs in areas where we operate, promoting digital inclusion and skills development. These hubs serve as accessible points for community members to engage with digital technologies, fostering greater connectivity and learning opportunities. The hubs have been successfully implemented in several locations already, which include Callington Town Hall, Wadebridge Sports and Leisure Centre, Liskerrett Community Centre in Liskeard, and Dobwalls Methodist Hall.

Alongside this, we’ve partnered with many organisations to promote the community hubs and other initiatives, including: Young and Talented, KIT|24, B|23, Air Ambulance, Cornwall Newquay Airport, Cornwall VFS, Cornwall Business Membership, and schools around the South West.

B-23 Initiative

In collaboration with the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce and LEAP, we launched the B-23 initiative, bringing together 23 Cornish businesses in 2023 to support them in achieving B Corp certification. This program aims to create a network of businesses committed to high social and environmental standards, enhancing Cornwall’s reputation as a hub for sustainable business practices.

Supporting The Real Living Wage

Cornwall has officially been recognised as a Living Wage Place – becoming the first area in the UK to receive this accreditation from the Living Wage Foundation and marking a significant step in the county’s commitment to fair pay and tackling in-work poverty. This movement required large employers such as Wildanet to pursue the accreditation—we’re proud to be associated with this initiative, standing alongside more than 300 accredited employers across Cornwall.

Apprenticeship Programme

We’re also investing in the future of Cornwall’s tech workforce through a pioneering Apprenticeship programme, delivered in partnership with the nationally recognised Truro and Penwith College. Together, we have launched the South West’s first Telecoms Field Operative Apprenticeship, offering a structured pathway into the digital infrastructure sector.

Next Steps For Wildanet

We recognise that sustainability is an ongoing journey. We’re focused on continuous improvement—regularly assessing our impact and seeking innovative ways to reduce our environmental footprint and enhance our social contributions. Our B Corp certification, carbon neutrality goals, partnerships and community-focused initiatives are just the beginning of our commitment to being a forward-thinking, environmentally responsible provider.

Water & Land and Life (Environment)

Building on improved water use measurement in 2024, we will implement a formal water reduction plan in 2025. We are also committed to advancing our circular economy strategy by prioritising the reuse and repurposing of end-of-life products. Additionally, a comprehensive review of our waste policy will be undertaken to align with these circular principles.

Supply Chain Management (Community)

With over 90% of our emissions linked to our supply chain, collaboration is vital to achieving our Net Zero ambitions. In 2025, we will scale up the engagement initiated in 2024—supporting partners through knowledge sharing on carbon reporting and the benefits of becoming a B Corp.

Evolving B Corp Standards

In 2024, Wildanet began evaluating the draft B Corp standards through a research project led by our ESG team and a Good Work Champion intern. With the initial assessment complete, we will now work across departments to implement the necessary policies and actions to align with the evolving framework
